Our Story...Celebrating Black History Month

Art has the power of story…and through these stories we are informed, inspired, connected.

The Alliance Art Gallery in Hannibal, Missouri is pleased to present Our Story: African. Black. American, a collection of visual art works in celebration of Black History Month. This exhibition, curated by Faye Dant, Director of Jim’s Journey: The Huck Finn Freedom Center in Hannibal, will run throughout the month of February. A opening reception will be held on Saturday, February 12 from 4 until 7:00 pm. The reception and the exhibit are free and open to the public.

We invite you to learn about the lives of “unsung heroes” through the portraits of Pittsburgh artist Morgan Overton. Her work amplifies “the voices and visibility of society's historically silenced.” Come be inspired by the stories of St. Louis artist cbabi bayoc, who in 2012, began a series of paintings of fathers at all life stages and inspired a community dialogue about the importance of a strong foundation and support system for all children. Join us as we connect to the stories of Andrea Kahrizma Hughes, who in addition to making her own art, directs the 14th Street Artist Community/Zuka Arts Guild in St. Louis, “a collaboration of social outreach organizations, artists, artisans, musicians, poets, and other genres of the arts in an effort to build a better community and build a greater sense of fulfillment in our individual lives.”

Also featured are works by Robert Hamilton Brown, Jemma, Adam Johnson, Janet Adelbayo Adenike, Ernie Barnes, Sami Bentil, Robert Hale through Portfolio Gallery and Education Center, and Preston Jackson.

The Alliance Art Gallery is proud to host this exhibition presented in collaboration with Jim’s Journey: the Huck Finn Freedom Center, The Hannibal Juneteenth Committee, and Hannibal Parks and Recreation. In addition to the art showcase, a community celebration for Black History Month will take place on February 19th from 3 until 10 PM at the Admiral Coontz Armory.
